I have no third brake light in my Bed Topper, and the one on the truck is out. I just did a little research. In the state of Colorado Third Brake lights are required for all passenger cars manufactured after 1986, but only for light trucks after 1994. My Ranger is a 1993. That means I dont have to fix any of that. Now I can cross 2 more things off my list, WooHoo!

Maybe i'm just weird, but I need everything working in my car or it drives me nuts! So i end up repairing it myself or paying someone to do it.

Well my third taillight is blocked by the shell and I have no third taillight in the shell. So it's not that bad, but I'm (mostly) like you in that regard

Honestly, with the cap on I'd rather have that 3rd light out anyhow. When I have the dogbox in my truck, I can see the light from my 3rd light and sometimes it's annoying seeing my own brakes.

You can definitely have some close calls without a top center mount light though. They're so common that when people don't see them it takes them just a bit longer to realize you're braking. Not critical, but something to take care of eventually.
